C1: ClimateYouthsPV Train-the-Youth Workers on participatory video production processes in Cyprus

The workshop introduced the approach and methods of Participatory Video. Theoretical introduction alternates with practical exercises. Youth workers learned how to facilitate different groups in realizing a film in a participatory and democratic way. They learn basic skills of camera usage a, filming and editing. Practical work included making films of short duration and video messages. The workshop was based on learning by doing with (external) inputs and at the same time, it served as a practical example of how such a workshop can be facilitated.

This activity was a 5-day training event organised by STANDO LTD and aimed at the increase of the range of teaching abilities of the youth workers, with a set of skills sorely needed by the youth learners regarding participatory video production processes. At the end of the course, the participants:

  • Learned how to use video equipment and/or to film with a smartphone
  • Learned basics about film and editing on the computer and/or smartphone
  • Acquired knowledge about how PV can be applied and how to facilitate a PV project (with a variety of sample videos)
  • Learned the basic tools in storytelling.

The profile of the participants was:

Youth workers who either already work in the field of youth and want to upgrade their training methodology with aspects of empowering youths to take action on climate change, through engaging them in motivating and creative practices (PV) in order to communicate their messages and perspectives to decision-makers and the public.

The training took place in Cyprus, from the 19th until the 23rd of July 2022, where 11 youth workers attended the activity. The youth workers were selected by partners through a call on their website and interview in order to see their level of experience in youth training. A pre-requirement was that participants must understand and be able to work in the English language, be open to learning, be collaborative and must demonstrate the motivation to take part in the transnational activity. After the completion of the “train the trainers” workshop all partners will provide their feedback on the quality of the content and the structure of the training methodology and curriculum (an evaluation questionnaire will be administered to all partners).
